For French literati, it\u2019s like the Oscars and the Olympics rolled into one. Who will enjoy the thrill of victory? Who will suffer the agony of defeat?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like the Pulitzer Prize in the United States and the Booker Prize in the UK, France\u2019s literary awards bring fame, prestige, and sometimes a big jump in book sales. Let\u2019s take a look at these &#8216;Big Six&#8217; awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #d10a26;\">The Goncourt Prize<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>This is the biggest of the Big Six, the oldest, and the most prestigious. Begun in 1903, the Goncourt goes to the \u201cbest and most innovative prose work of the year.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Past winners include such notables as Marcel Proust, Simone de Beauvoir, and Andr\u00e9 Malraux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Goncourt jury begins by publishing a \u201clong list\u201d of 15 contenders, then narrowing it down to a \u201cshort list\u201d of eight, before selecting four finalists\u2014with each step creating buzz throughout France. <\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/Literary-awards-Proust-public-domain.jpeg\" alt=\"France: Top Literary Awards - The Big Six\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-91173 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The jury then discusses the final four and votes on a winner, which is announced in early November. Many Goncourt winners get translated into English, so if you are searching for a great read by a French author, take a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prix_Goncourt\">those who have won<\/a> this most prestigious of French literary awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #d10a26;\">The Renaudot Prize<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Begun in 1926, the Renaudot is considered France\u2019s runner-up prize and is awarded moments after the Goncourt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To avoid bestowing their prize on the same novel as the Goncourt, the Renaudot jury always has a backup book picked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And sometimes they pick the better book!
