And while this great nation often lives up\u00a0to them, there are times when <i><em>\u00e9galit\u00e9<\/em><\/i> is in short supply. Too many French institutions have historically been boy\u2019s clubs for example.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This became clear\u00a0when the late Simone Veil was recently interred in the Pantheon, that near-sacred resting place of the most distinguished French citizens. It was striking that while over 80 people have entered the Pantheon since its beginning in 1791, Madame Veil was only the fifth woman. That isn\u2019t very <em>\u00e9gal <\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>Even more striking is the membership of the <em>Acad\u00e9mie fran\u00e7aise<\/em>, that noble body charged with protecting the French language. Founded in 1635 by Cardinal Richelieu, a total of 732 members, known as \u201cImmortals,\u201d have been elected over the centuries. But only nine have been women, and the first was elected less than 40 years ago!<\/p>\n<p>Who are these leading French intellectuals? Let\u2019s find out.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #d10a26;\">9 French females &#8211; all Immortals &#8211; <em>Les Immortelles<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #d10a26;\">1.<\/span><span style=\"color: #d10a26;\">Marguerite Yourcenar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Novelist, poet, essayist and literary critic, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marguerite_Yourcenar\">Yourcenar<\/a> was the first woman ever elected to the <em>Acad\u00e9mie, <\/em>in 1980. She is best known for her book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Memoirs_of_Hadrian\">Memoirs of Hadrian<\/a><\/em><em>,<\/em> a monumental work considered by some as one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2002\/may\/08\/books.booksnews\">100 greatest books<\/a> ever written.<\/p>\n<p>Yourcenar moved to the United States in 1939, at the outbreak of World War II, and later became an American citizen. Known primarily for her work on the language and culture of ancient Greece, she was one of the world\u2019s foremost authorities on Thucydides.<\/p>\n<p>She was also the first woman ever elected to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coll%C3%A8ge_de_France\">Coll\u00e8ge de France<\/a>, France\u2019s most prestigious research institute, which was founded in 1530.<\/p>\n<p>In recognition for her work, she was made an honorary Greek citizen and the country\u2019s Ambassador of Hellenism in 1995. De Romilly passed away in 2010.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #d10a26;\">3. H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Carr\u00e8re d\u2019Encausse<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A political historian specializing in Russian history, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/H%C3%A9l%C3%A8ne_Carr%C3%A8re_d%27Encausse\">Cerr\u00e8re d\u2019Encausse<\/a> became an Immortal in 1990 and was named its Perpetual Secretary (chairperson) in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>She is considered one of the most eminent historians in France and is a former member of the European Parliament. In 1978, she famously predicted that the Soviet Union would break up into its 15 different republics. Simone Veil<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Lawyer, politician and activist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simone_Veil\">Veil<\/a> became an Immortal in 2008. A Holocaust survivor, Veil went on to serve as French Minister of Health and President of the European Parliament. She is perhaps best known for pushing forward the law legalizing abortion in France in 1975. It consists of trousers, a jacket with tails and green embroidery, a fuzzy bicorn hat, and a sword.
