Too often, \u2018we\u2019, the French, are easily perceived through that deformed linguistic prism: we are assumed to be the masters of love, seduction and extra-marital affairs!<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">However, since 4 September, I\u2019ve begun to believe that there might be some truth to this observation: this was the day when France\u2019s bookstores were inundated by copies of the former First Lady\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Val%C3%A9rie_Trierweiler\" target=\"_blank\">Val\u00e9rie Trierweiler\u2019s<\/a> book \u2018<em>Merci pour le Moment<\/em>\u2019.\u00b9<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> The publication of this tell-all book, worthy of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barbaracartland.com\/static\/newsflash.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Barbara Cartland<\/a> (the prolific English romance novelist), is hopefully the final stage of a story that, in the opinion of this French citizen and perplexed spectator, started seven years ago. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #d10a26;\">A seven-year French saga<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> The current presidential mandate was predestined from the start to be a public and private life mash-up. In June 2007, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S%C3%A9gol%C3%A8ne_Royal\" target=\"_blank\">S\u00e9gol\u00e8ne Royal\u2019s<\/a> break-up with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fran%C3%A7ois_Hollande\" target=\"_blank\">Fran\u00e7ois Hollande<\/a> was officially announced after she had lost the presidential race against <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicolas_Sarkozy\" target=\"_blank\">Nicolas Sarkozy<\/a>. The French learned in the tabloids that Hollande had been cheating on her with a political journalist from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parismatch.com\" target=\"_blank\">Paris Match<\/a>, Val\u00e9rie Trierweiler, and that she was his new companion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter wp-image-75773 \" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27567%27%20height%3D%27378%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20567%20378%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27567%27%20height%3D%27378%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/6901517736_c859f57013_z-1.jpg\" alt=\"MyFrenchLife\u2122 - Val\u00e9rie Trierweiler - Francois Hollande\" width=\"567\" height=\"378\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Thankfully, Nicolas Sarkozy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/2012\/11\/09\/le-buzz-beyond-the-french-news-2\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s2\">divorce and remarriage<\/span><\/a> within the first year of his presidency made the French forget about the unlucky contender and her private life. But change had already come. The French presidential statute had lost some of its untouchable aura. People considered G\u00e9n\u00e9ral de Gaulle or Fran\u00e7ois Mitterrand (who had, against all odds, managed to conceal his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/12\/01\/world\/europe\/mazarine-pingeot-mitterrand-daughter-looks-back.html?pagewanted=all\" target=\"_blank\">double life and his daughter Mazarine<\/a>) to be figures of a bygone age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">In May 2011, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dominique_Strauss-Kahn\" target=\"_blank\">Dominique Strauss-Kahn\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-13420440\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s2\">incredible arrest<\/span><\/a> in New York and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/news\/dominique-strauss-kahn-sex-scandal\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s2\">global lynching in the media<\/span><\/a> ruled him out of being the next French socialist candidate for the 2012 Presidential Election although the polls were in his favor. As a matter of fact, Fran\u00e7ois Hollande, ironically, became the candidate by default. He probably had this scandal in mind too when he made the solemn promise to be \u2018a normal president\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #d10a26;\">A normal French President with an exposed private life <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">That sense of normality quickly vanished when Val\u00e9rie Trierweiler\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-18406390\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s2\">tweet against S\u00e9gol\u00e8ne Royal<\/span><\/a> made it clear she had a grudge against the mother of her companion\u2019s four children.\u00b2 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-75786 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/JacquilineDubois0.jpg\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/JacquilineDubois0.jpg\" alt=\"JacquilineDubois0\" width=\"243\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27243%27%20height%3D%27243%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20243%20243%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27243%27%20height%3D%27243%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/JacquilineDubois0-60x60.jpg 60w, https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/JacquilineDubois0-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/JacquilineDubois0-220x220.jpg 220w, https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/JacquilineDubois0.jpg 689w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-orig-sizes=\"(max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/>It was devastating for her image which she then tried rather unsuccessfully to make amiable until the \u2018Julie Gayet-gate\u2019 last January. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/world\/french-president-francois-hollande-accused-of-affair-with-julie-gayet-20140110-hv82n.html\" target=\"_blank\">The incident<\/a>, in which Fran\u00e7ois Hollande was caught by tabloid photographers visiting his young mistress, actress <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0310865\/\" target=\"_blank\">Julie Gayet<\/a> &#8211;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>on a scooter no less &#8211; led to Trierweiler&#8217;s\u00a0quick and unexpected repudiation. This won her over in the hearts of many, who would not have wished such humiliation to their worst enemy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Little did the French people know that the worst was yet to come\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #d10a26;\">All the world\u2019s a stage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">French public opinion today on the saga is divided. Most journalists and politicians think this book is trashy and won\u2019t read it. However many French people who don\u2019t belong to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20140905-france-hollande-approval-rating-13-percent-trierweiler-thevenoud-socialist\/\" target=\"_blank\">the 13% that\u00a0still support the President<\/a>, argue it highlights the dark sides of his personality and that the people should be informed about it.
