The Lumi\u00e8re brothers were the co-conspirators behind this event, after their invention of the cinematograph that same year.<\/p>\n<p>The screening featured ten short clips, two of which remain well-known references in cinema: \u00a0employees walking out of the Lumi\u00e8re Factory at the end of their day\u2019s work and <i>\u2018L\u2019arroseur arros\u00e9\u2019<\/i> (the waterer watered), an expression which was immediately adopted and is still widely used in French, the English equivalent being \u2018the biter being bit\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #d10a26;\">\u201cWe\u2019ll always have Paris\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/At-the-office-Casablanca-quote-cropped.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter size-full wp-image-73149\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27569%27%20height%3D%27272%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20569%20272%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27569%27%20height%3D%27272%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/At-the-office-Casablanca-quote-cropped.jpg\" alt=\"movies in Paris At the office, Casablanca quote\" width=\"569\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was probably an accurate premonition for the future role Paris would play in the movie industry as it developed and expanded throughout the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century. Even though a few decades later Hollywood had already unarguably become the capital of cinema, Paris was not left out of the picture \u2013so to speak.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the exhibition \u2018<i><a href=\"https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/2012\/10\/17\/french-celluloid-dreams-paris-vu-par-hollywood\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paris Vu par Hollywood<\/a>\u00a0<\/i>\u2019\u00a0held at the Paris City Hall, traced back in beautiful images and artefacts the link and attraction that continued to exist between both places. Indeed, of all cities around the world, the City of Light is probably the most celebrated in the history of movies.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #d10a26;\">It\u2019s legendary<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/AbigailandJacqueline.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload  wp-image-73132 alignright\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27231%27%20height%3D%27308%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20231%20308%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27231%27%20height%3D%27308%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/AbigailandJacqueline.jpg\" alt=\"AbigailandJacqueline\" width=\"231\" height=\"308\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even as I write this article, the last couple of weeks\u2019 new releases in France count three films where Paris is part of the decor: \u2018Monuments Men\u2019 , \u2018Le Weekend\u2019 and \u20183 Days to Kill\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, some movies have been such huge successes that they have become many people\u2019s favourites. \u2018Midnight in Paris\u2019 by Woody Allen, for example, revived the director\u2019s career in Hollywood and was acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic to the delight of Paris-lovers. I don\u2019t know one French person who has not praised this movie.<\/p>\n<p>I have friends from Los Angeles who celebrated their 20<sup>th<\/sup> wedding anniversary at \u2018Le Grand Colbert\u2019 restaurant, inspired by a romantic scene from \u2018Something\u2019s Gotta Give\u2019, with Jack Nicholson, Diane Keaton and Keanu Reeves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Midnight-in-Paris-set-for-group-photo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload aligncenter  wp-image-73144\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27540%27%20height%3D%27405%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20540%20405%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27540%27%20height%3D%27405%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Midnight-in-Paris-set-for-group-photo.jpg\" alt=\"movies in Paris Midnight in Paris set for group photo\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, le Louvre did not need Hollywood\u2019s publicity for fame but who doesn\u2019t have images of Tom Hanks and <a href=\"https:\/\/theproject.com.au\/myfrenchlife\/2012\/10\/26\/french-film-friday-the-best-of-audrey-tautou\/\" target=\"_blank\">Audrey Tautou<\/a> from \u2018The Da Vinci Code\u2019 when meandering through its corridors or standing in line outside the glass pyramid? The French actress was cast for this Hollywood blockbuster because she had just enchanted the planet in (of course) the Paris-based film \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amelie\" target=\"_blank\">Am\u00e9lie<\/a>\u2019!<\/p>\n<p>Movies or scenes of movies in Paris, be it for fashion, romance, history or adventure, have influenced the way not only prospective visitors perceive the city but also its inhabitants.
